Life File

All your essential records in one easily accessible place

For total peace of mind now, and into the future, create your own unique Life File.

A Life File stores your essential records in one place, accessible online 24/7 - and logically organised. Your records are simplified and made easy for your loved ones, if they need to step in to look after you or, ultimately, to wind up your affairs at your death.

A Life File is because the unexpected can and does happen, be it an accident, ill health, or death - change can happen in an instant, and sadly at that point it is often too late for us to offer assistance to organise our affairs.

If the worst did happen, could your loved ones pick up from where you left off? How easy could they support you if you are living but struggling with an illness, disability or in the worst case scenario, tidy up your affairs after your death? Would they be left scrambling, trying to locate information, feeling not only the stress and anguish of whatever has happened to you, but without a starting point to provide assistance?

A Life File is your essential records in one easily accessible, secure, location.

A completed Life File…

  • Will give you peace of mind – that nothing is forgotten, everything is in one place.
  • Prevents the need for your loved ones to be wondering which box/drawer to look in, or whether they sort through the spare room or the garage.
  • Can be managed by you, but you can also choose to give access to someone you trust.
  • Is an essential estate planning tool and can save your estate legal costs at your death.

Having your Life File online means:

  • A living archive of all your important information at your finger-tips
  • Simple and easy process to update your details, as your situation changes
  • 24-hour access
  • Secure storage
  • A central portal – accessible across all your devices
  • You can share electronically or download a printable copy

I am relieved to have all my important information collated in one easy to access place. Great peace of mind if anything happens to me, that my family will be well informed.Sharlene

Here are some common situations in which a Life File would be invaluable:

Death of a spouse/partner: What if you or your partner is in charge of the household finances? In the depth of grief, and without a Life File, the remaining partner will be left to connect the dots with solicitors, the bank, power and insurance, investments and all the other small, but important, matters that make up our lives.
Photos and Memorabilia: As technology takes over our lives, so does how we store our photos and other memories. Those may well be locked on a computer or phone that no one left behind knows how to access. Let a Life File unlock the solution.
Significant ill health: Imagine a loved one in the hospital unable to communicate. Where do you start to manage their affairs? Do they have an enduring power of attorney, where is their solicitor, what about their day-to-day household accounts, do they have any wishes or final requests? A Life File will hold the answers.
A loved one dies overseas: This can be particularly challenging, as often families won’t have access to essential records, communicating internationally can be time consuming and costly and a body may need to be brought home. A Life File can be of vital assistance.
A Pandemic strikes: Covid has, and continues to, cause chaos across the world. Delays to get home have proved costly. It has taken loved ones and stopped families from getting together to sort out critical information. A Life File steps across borders.

What is involved in creating a Life File and what is in it ....

  1. After clicking on the subscribe button, you will fill in your own personal information and follow the steps on the screen
  2. You will then be prompted, online or via hardcopy, to complete a comprehensive list of questions, including but not limited to your own personal, household, financial details along with medical/funeral scenarios, personal and professional contacts, assets and liabilities, insurance policies held and more. You will need to invest some time - but your Life File is well worth doing properly to ensure all your information is captured correctly.
    • Once you have completed a digital Life File, you will receive via email, an auto-generated summary in the form of a PDF document. You will have access 24/7 to view and or edit - by going to: https://www.lifefile.co.nz/my-life-file/
    • If technology is not your thing and you chose the hardcopy download file – you will receive a blank template to complete and store in a safe place.
  3. We strongly recommend taking a copy of your completed LIFE FILE to your solicitor to attach to your Will. You may also wish to give a copy to a trusted friend and/or loved one.

A Life File is so much more than a will….

Perhaps you think – I have a Will, that’s enough? A Will is a legal document that spells out your wishes at death.

A Life File is your summary, the information needed to support your life if you aren’t able to, or to tidy up your affairs. What is your blood type? who is your solicitor? what bank/s do you use? who are your providers for insurance, household services? what about accounts that may need paid? a small investment almost forgotten, a child you sponsor, clubs you belong to and have responsibilities with, a debt falling due and so much more.

It’s likely you haven’t considered much of the information that can be summarised in a Life File. Information that will be needed by your loved ones, should something unexpected happen to you. We often struggle to remember important information ourselves, or where we put something – how hard will it be for others?

For family members or a solicitor to spend time tracking down all the various aspects of our lives, that has a cost – be it time or money.

A place for everything and everything in its place.Benjamin Franklin

A Life File is also for the living...

Of course, death is not the only circumstance which demands access to your personal files.

Experienced travellers know only too well what can go wrong when you are overseas. Phones can be stolen or lost, and with them critical information, which is then neither safe, or available. Bad news when you are in a foreign country. A Life File means you can still have access online 24/7 to your important information/contacts.

An accident, emergency or natural disaster can leave us in a state of complete vulnerability, sometimes physically incapacitated to the extent that we can no longer take care of our affairs, or everything we owned is lost. How reassuring to know that you or a trusted person can immediately step in to do what needs to be done. Managing all your affairs is made so much easier, because you cared enough to take action and create a Life File

Convenience

Ultimately a Life File is convenience

You don’t need to be incapacitated or dead. While you are still very much into living - how convenient would it be to be able to immediately pull out the information you need when sitting in front of your bank manager, lawyer, lender, insurance/investment broker, family and others?

Hauling sheaves of paper across town, forgetting critical bits of information, fumbling for passwords. With a Life File these can be in the past. Everything you need will be right there, at your fingertips just when you need it.
